A bipartisan first in 2020
ALCSI worked with Senator Tina Smith and then-Senator Marco Rubio to co-draft the first U.S. Senate resolution supporting lung cancer awareness and screening. The Senate passed it by unanimous consent in December 2020.
Since then, ALCSI has helped advance annual Senate resolutions that address issues including lung cancer in women, people who have never smoked, and veterans.

Working on access to screening
ALCSI worked with Congressman Brendan Boyle and Senator Tina Smith to draft Katherine’s Lung Cancer Early Detection and Survival Act of 2021. The proposed legislation sought to expand coverage for people whose risk may not fit the usual age or smoking-history limits.
The organization also worked on a House resolution supporting Lung Cancer Awareness Month and has presented screening awareness ideas at the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

From Congress to the statehouse
In September 2026, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 1124, an ALCSI-led bill that will bring lung cancer screening information to tobacco retailers across the state. ALCSI’s work spans national resolutions and state-level efforts that put screening information in more public places.
