RIDE HARD BREATH EASY

Our Collaboration with RHBE

This April 25th-26th 2026, our ALCSI students are hopping on their bikes (indoor and outdoor) and riding with RHBE!

Ride Hard Breathe Easy’s (RHBE) mission is to “Ease the suffering of lung cancer patients and their caregivers by raising awareness, supporting early detection, assisting patients, and working to end the stigma associated with the disease."

Lung cancer patients often face a challenging and lonely journey after receiving their diagnosis. The main element of RHBE’s purpose is to financially support patients and caregivers at eight hospitals: Crozer Health, Dartmouth Cancer Center, Duke Cancer Institute, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Jefferson Health, Johns Hopkins, Penn's Abramson Cancer Center, and Temple Health.

One of their signature events is the Ride Hard Challenge, started by Lisa Etkins, a Social Worker at Fox Chase Cancer Center, in 2021. Here, anyone can challenge themselves to ride “Any Bike, Any Distance, Anywhere”. Lisa’s personal challenge was to ride 100 miles on a Peloton with her “two besties." As Lisa says, “We ride because we can! And I am honored to ride for my patients!”

Another one of RHBE's signature events occurring when Jack Owens rode his bicycle from San Francisco, CA to Ocean City, NJ, a journey of 3,600 miles and over 130,000 feet of elevation, in an effort to raise $100,000. Many people across the nation have joined in the effort by riding with Jack along stretches of his journey, or by riding by themselves in their own towns. The whole journey is documented across all of RHBE's social media pages

The money raised during these events help lung cancer patients right now to get a ride to an appointment, pay for a utility bill, help with food insecurity, and much more.  Your pedaling will make a difference, and as one patient said, “Receiving this money has been a lifeline. It has allowed me to stay in my home and focus on my treatment and hopefully my recovery. I am so thankful for the kindness of Ride Hard Breathe Easy. It has given me hope to strength to keep fighting.”
